Can you tell us a bit about Mutecell?

Mutecell first started as (Mutecells) back in 2007 when I was working with a partner who then later split up. As I got to choose the name, I decided to dig it up from the grave after moving to Berlin in 2011 and started my Techno project. The name I used in the past was my original name, Kevin O’keeffe, and you can also find some other stuff under that name on Beatport.

How has your music style or taste evolved over the years?

Moving to Berlin has really changed and evolved a lot for me in the Techno scene I was focusing on since 2006. I think that it just doesn’t stop changing, but I really can say I love the way it has been going since the last year. I think that the producers are taking sound in itself more seriously!

Most interesting record you’ve heard?

i have a lot to mention but one of them would be ‘Drain Hum’ from Mike Parker released back in 1999. It’s just one of them that came to my head.

How are you involved with Natch Records?

Natch records are Synthek (Label manager), Audio Louis (A&R) and myself (A&R). We are a team working together and we all have our part to play in the label, so that we can build a solid concept in what we do.

Our Ltd 003 (vinyl) out with Analog People, Ltd 004 Synthek and Audio Louis with a Mattias Fridell remix and Ltd 005, which will be myself and a surprise remixer for now. I am also planning a CD release album of Mutecell maybe end of December if things get finished on time.

When and where, how was this mix recorded?

It was recorded on a lazy, cool Sunday right here at the Darker Than Wax HQ.

How will you describe it to us?

It comprises of different shades or moods, if you like. I tried to capture the various phases in his musical career, from the early days to some of the more experimental bits that he was doing. I mean, to be honest there are too many ill tributes out there already by the likes of J Rocc and Questlove, just to name these two but this mix is more about the curation of specific tribute tunes by contemporary beat makers that continue to be influenced by Dilla himself. Also, the concept of ‘blending’ in btw spaces is what I am obsessed with in my mixes, and this is an ongoing experiment in creating blends.

How did you get first introduced to J Dilla’s music?

This was back in Australia, when I was studying for my Architecture degree. I was hanging at a mate’s room when Slum Village’s Fantastic Vol.2 came on radio. I was hooked for life. That was my official portal into the world of Hip-hop.

Favourite J Dilla tune and why?

This is a tough one, but ‘Dreamy’ would come close to being that. The way he used Dave Grusin’s sample was just amazing. I can’t even explain in words really. It’s just pure vibe and energy. TIMELESS music.

Favourite EP off your label and why?

It would have to be the forthcoming ‘Truman Shuzz’ Ep by one of our new signings, Monk’ out of Paris. If you dig the heavy synthesized funk stuff, you do need to check this one out. Music that works both on and off the dance floor.

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Passionate, brash at times but always grounded.

How and where was this mix recorded?

This mix was recorded around mid- november at Eric’s studio, Brussels, Belgium.
A fusion of vinyl and digital files, all thrown together in Ableton.

How will you describe this mix to us?

This set goes back in time and forth, and refers to the moment when we were doing mixes on a local radio station called Radio Vibrations (somewhere in 2003) in the Brussels area. ‘Laid back’- founder (ldbk.eu) julien Mourlon asked us to do some short interventions and mini-mixes to integrate in his show he was running on that tiny, rebellious radio station.

We called it “Radio Hijack” back then, and we kept this kind of style till present when we got time to prepare a mix. In the pure LDBK tradition that we helped establish, this mix flows between Jazz-Funk, Breaks, Soul, Library music, own compositions, Hip Hop…to the future beat sound of today. Everything that inspires or that catches our ears at this moment.

How did you guys meet and start working together?

We met through mutual friends in 2000. Eric was already messing around with early versions of the Acid- audio software. He hooked LuiGi up, later came the MPC’s, samplers and other gear upfront and this train kept on rolling…till present. Our trademark: exploring the boundaries of soulful music between 90 and 120 bpm. MonkeyRobot loves to share its music and energy by bringing very organic live performances, with lots of keys and MPC drumming. As live as it gets.

Tell us more about your album planned, any concept or new techniques?

Brooklyn’s based label, Bastard Jazz, came with the idea to release an EP, after the feedback on the acclaimed track “Basement Infusion” that came out earlier this year on the ‘Tempo Dreams compilation’ album by Tall Black Guy.

On our self-titled 12”, we deliver four diverse tracks that showcase their skills behind the boards, the MPC and the keys, with a keen ear for the dancefloor. Kicking things off, “Brick Stomach” is a synth-heavy four-to-the-floor 120 BPM joint that comes off like a Floating Points visit back in time to 1980’s Detroit with it’s rolling snares, arpeggiating synth bassline and cloudy pads. Next Up, “Northern Light” filters shimmering space disco vibes through big, thumping instrumental Hip-Hop drums and moody analog bass. On the flip, “Rosè Gris” takes things in a funkier direction at 100BPM with it’s syncopated drums, irresistible lead, squelching bassline and all manner of synthesizer explorations. Rounding off the EP is “Last Days”, which still manages to inject a funky 80’s analog sound into it’s melancholy downtempo vibes.

Describe the scene in Brussels, what’s good?

If we speak about Brussels, we ratherly could speak about Belgium in a way.

Belgium has an infamous, for most unknown, musical history. Legendary jazz cats and projects, chansonniers, the Belgian Popcorn DJ-movement which was somewhat the Belgian equivalent of England’s better known Northern Soul movement, a largely spread new-wave community in the beginning of the 80′s, inventing the new beat scene at the end of the eighties (which became the precursor of European House), widely spread techno & house output during the nineties and it’s related internationally acclaimed club culture, and maybe most of all Belgium is internationally the most renowned for their rockbands we guess. Let’s say that the Belgium’s musical history and output is quite phenomenal in proportion to the tiny scale of our country. The list of bands and artists is endless.

We consider ourselves to be part of a movement instead of a music scene as such. There are a lot of DJ’s /producers//blogs/promoters who are more or less walking the same path when we’re talking of producing or playing soulful underground music. As we’ve been making music for over 10 years now most of them became friends or friends of friends. Especially Brussels, our capital and the place where we live, is quiet active in promoting quality soul-music the last years through dedicated radio shows, parties, labels and blogs.

When and where, how was this mix recorded?

How would you describe it to us?

Well, I could either go with ‘loads of wicked funky tunes’ or ‘a slice of the most charismatic spectrum of modern soul and jazz’ haha – up to you! Hopefully its entertaining and enjoyable for listeners!!

You must be excited about your upcoming album as Double Yellow dropping 12 Nov 12. Could you tell us more about the process behind it?

Yes very excited that its finally coming out and with such a great label as Here & Now Recordings. The label have been a massive support in order to get this release out and showed a real love for the album from the moment they heard it.

Dave Lilley and I worked on this album in 2008 and 9 and it finally found a home in 2011 with Here and Now after being hooked up with John Cunningham from the label via a friend.

Dave and I developed Life In The Slow Lane over 18 months of recording and bouncing ideas back and forth to one another. We trimmed it into what we hope is a solid and engaging album after hours of recording horns, pianos, guitars, percussion etc.

We had an EP out in May which featured remixes from Yam Who? and Phase 5 Stereo which got an amazing critical response from Gilles Peterson, Joey Negro, Danny Krivit and many other heavyweight names!!

Could you tell us about your working relationship with Dave Lilley?

I first met Dave in 2004 when he was a promoter and ran a night called ‘The Beat Route’ in Manchester. I became a resident at the night and after some late night musical chats we made some collaborations, along with his wife Suzi on vocals, which ended up on each of my 4 Diesler albums.

We spoke about developing Double Yellow as a project in its own right rather than it just ‘featuring’ on my albums with the focus being on Dave as the vocalist. He took the lead to develop and write tracks then recording horns, piano and vocals etc around at the spare room in friends houses. We both worked on the structure and arrangement of the tracks as well as the production.

I think Dave is such a talented guy and I so honored to work with him!

What do you think is the best part of what you do…and the worst?

The best part is being totally dedicated to making music and producing. I love the creative process and releasing it. Quite simply I get a kick out of it!! The worst part is when releases might miss an audience which, of course, can sometimes impact on future ventures!! The roller coaster of music I suppose!!

And…what’s up for 2013?

Promoting the Double Yellow – Life In The Slow lane album, developing a Here & Now vs Diesler Remix Album, a secret 7″ Diesler series with another producer and working on new Diesler material with a brass band which should hopefully see the light of day next year, oh and the usual DJing and remixing!

A booty, jackin mix with moments of reprieve from the one and only anonymous Anonym. Hailing from the legendary Motor City aka Detroit, the true essence of his home town can be heard and felt in his music.  No tracklist, but the trainspotters in the house can start the ball rolling.

Where and when was this mix recorded and how would you describe it?

Few months back I recorded this one in the studio. I would describe the mix as one hour of ass shaking funk, dirty Detroit techno, and some house spices from all over the globe…

Why so mysterious?

Who, me? Who I am doesn’t matter in regards to the music. Far too many of us have forgotten that and the music suffers for it. This end of the 90s look at me super star DJ/Producer bull shit that started when everyones ego and success went to their heads and they lost the spark they had. It’s because when you let the public or your fan base stare at you and focus so much love/envy/hate on you it warps you as an artist. It takes a certain kind of person to handle that role well, and whether or not I am that kind of person to handle it I do not know, but I prefer to keep it this way for now… It is also super fun to be anonymous! I am probably one of the only people who can rock a party come off my set, change clothes backstage, take of my mask, and go out on the floor to dance the rest of the night and no one knows it was me who played the show and I can dance uninterrupted. Just an anonymous guy in the club.

What is your music philosophy other than the above?

Music for me has to have passion. It has to have soul and emotional content. I have to feel the music. Which means it has to come from somewhere special. Mind, body, and soul. When you play or when people are dancing you have to lose yourself in the music and the mix. The mix has to be dynamic. It has to be diverse and interesting. With all the components of the music I mentioned before. In the mix not playing house and techno together with a few of their odd cousins like hip house and ghetto tech. Is like having a party and not inviting over the whole family.. It’s just not done.

A record you would save from a fire?

That is a tough one but I keep a record case with all my releases on vinyl, test pressings if I can get it, and at least two copies of each EP, Remix of my song, or Remix I have done of other artists songs. So I would have to snatch that, but then it would be my Kraftwerk collection those two stacks of vinyl would be hardest to replace and are the most prized of my record collection but it would kill me to see the rest burn!!!

Most surprising place you heard your music being played?

Have not heard my music that often played but I guess the most surprised I was when I heard it playing on Pete Tong’s show and he was announcing my name Anonym and not sure how to say it. Don’t normally hear my music played on radio so it always surprises me.

Any LP in the works?

Always, had one almost finished a couple years ago. These days the labels are afraid and not sure how to market albums, and if they do, they want to have too much involvement in picking the songs and helping make the album. Which kills it. For me an album is a special thing and has to be of one vision so unless it is a group or collaboration then I think there should not be any unwanted outside influence put on the artist when creating such a work of art. I do have a new album almost finished again this time more techno then house as I have been leaning that way more these days in the studio. I have spoken to a few labels who might be interested. We will have to see if when I am finished if I can get it released as an album or if everyone will want to carve it up like butchers carve meat.. Wish me luck.

What music have you been working on lately?

Lately I have been working on new tracks for Gem Records, my label. I just had a release I made with Peter Horrevorts on Cocoon Recordings (Sven Vath’s label). Ana Bola it’s called, and that is still going strong. Somehow there have been a lot of collaborations with other artists, I guess I was feeling lonely in the studio.

Favourite piece of gear?

My Maschine, it brings back the old MPC3000 feeling, but then on my laptop sequencer…I also use it when I DJ and these snare rolls will make anyone reach for the rooftop!

You will be playing at Zouk on 17 Aug, tell us about it!

Ever since I saw that LED ceiling, I wanted to play there. Thanks to Avneesh for sending me some cool videos from that. I am used to playing huge crowds, but somehow I always like playing smaller venues. It usually has better sound, you can connect to the crowd more and I can play more clubby tracks, which I also like a lot. It’s easier to tell a story with your music, something I am always trying to do. Hopefully people will like the Dutch club-techno sound. The Zouk stage will have Fedde le Grand, who used to play my Secret Cinema – Rebounce track in every set. I guess times have changed, but double Dutch it is that night!

Are you looking forward to eating fried rice (we heard it’s your favourite)?

Haha! I know who told you that! But yes, I love fried rice! When I cook at home, no Asian dish will be without it. The older the pan, the better the taste, I want 1000 year old spices!! Or is that nasty??

If you could play a character in a movie, what movie would it be?

Definitely a science fiction movie, where I would discover a new type of energy which would make money useless and turn every discotheque into a techno loving crowd!

Where, when and how was this mix recorded?

I did this mix digitally at home on june 6th 2012. I spontaneously chose brand new and older tracks from my DJ collection, that includes also a couple of my own works on Deep Data.

How will you describe it to us?

I like 120 BPM or even lower which is often difficult to play in a club at the peak time but podcasts are a good thing to do that. So the mix is pretty laidback to listen to (at home) but still very danceable from my point of view, also because the tempo is rising continuously.

Which is your favorite track you’ve produced ever and why?

Phew, that is such a difficult question to answer. It´s so hard to pick only one and also my opinion on them is changing constantly. Today i would mention “Cut 3 (Rough Trax EP – DD41)” or “Dynamo (AtmoTrax EP – DD02)” or “Le Groove Rhodes (Le Rythme Korg EP -Dessous 79)” but tomorrow maybe i could see it differently.

What’s the toughest thing about your work right now?

There is no such thing. That´s why I always wanted to be a musician :)

What’s next for Deep Data?

As I´m writing this i have no concrete further plans but that is a standard situation for me. This way i´m keeping the label´s sound fresh and – as i´m producing quite a lot of music -there will be anyways one release per month in the end. So, the next EP is coming in the beginning of July.

What exactly is Deep Data Loops?

It´s a (sub) label for loop packs. These loops represent the style i´m producing on Deep Data. In fact, there are partially loops made from original DD tracks. They are a good help for producing and also bring a lot of fun.

This mix was recorded sometime during March of 2012, at my home studio – “The Zen Room” (no, it’s not a generic yoga studio, it’s an homage to The Rocky Horror Picture Show!).  I recorded this mix live on two turntables, a mixer and Serato Scratch Live.  And it features my recent favorite electro-funk and disco-house.

How is it like for you being in Dayton, Ohio?

It is very easy and comfortable to live here. It is also very inexpensive – I can pretty much pay my bills by freelancing, which frees up most of my time for pursuing my own projects, which is why I’ve stayed here for so long. I am so consumed by my various endeavors, that I don’t even notice where I’m living.

Tell us a bit of your new LP.

The new LP is still a work in progress — I hope to have it finished by the end of the year.  It’s called “Phantom Of The Disco” – and it’s a concept album about the Phantom Of The Disco – the behind-the-scenes creator of nightlife, and the people & challenges he encounters.  The music will be sample-based disco / electro / funk / hip-hop.

How did you pick up music?

When I was in the 7th grade, I attended a summer-camp about radio-broadcasting, and got my first taste of audio-editing.  I also experimented on my parents computer making loops (with the primitive “Wave Editor” software).  At the same time, I was first introduced to electronic music, hip-hop and scratching.  That’s when I decided I wanted to start making music.  I decided my instrument of choice would be turntables / scratching, so I started the long process of saving up money to purchase them…. And the rest is history!

Favourite music making thing/gear you own or wish you had?

Favorite:  My record collection.

Wish I had:  A 24-track analogue mixing console.

All is coming from the sample! Sometimes the sample can be the lead, sometimes it is just an arrangement. Then, I create and add the beat: The result can be instrumental either a  collaboration with a singer or a musician…My philosophy is close to the hip hop philosophy I guess.

You seem like an interesting personality, what is the most interesting gig you’ve played?

I have several good memories . All gigs in front of your own audience is very cool. You give the sound and receive back the energy, but sometimes, even with a new audience, the osmose can be perfect too. Festival Garorock 2010 and all my support for DJ Krush or Wax Tailor.

Can you list a few inspirations of yours?

Hip hop culture, sampling, and some great artists such as as Ennio Morricone , DJ Shadow , DJ Krush, Death in Vegas, Beastie Boys.

Are you a morning or night person?

At home, for working, playing, digging,  I’m definitively a morning person. On tour, it depends on the timing but when you have to travel after a show, you have to wake up early! Anyway, If the show was cool , you’re so full of energy that you do not care about that.

Describe a good day

A summer day:

Wake up with the sun / Switch on the studio / Work on a new idea or rehearse / Have lunch / Walk during 2 hours in Mont Veyrier / A 30-min swim in the lake as  you can see in the picture (Annecy ) / Back to home / Listening to your morning idea / Feed the cat (moumouche and mimine ) / Drink a beer / Have a Barbecue or a plancha.

A rainy day:

Watching Dexter, Six feet Under, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Carnivale, Boardwalk Empire or good movies! In bed of course.

A winter day:

Wake up with the sun / Riding or Skiing during 4 hours  / Drink one (or 4) beers ! / Eat a raclette or or a fondue savoyarde !

We trust that electrocaïne listeners need no introduction to the duo called Slam and the wonderful world of Soma Records. In the oft chance that you do, then this mix recorded live from their Pressure at the Arches night in Glasgow and generous interview should get your history lesson going good and proper. 

After such an illustrious history in the music business spanning almost every aspect, what are a couple of your favourite projects?

We spent a long time making our 2nd album ‘Alien Radio’ (which came out in 2001), using vocalists and musicians on some of the tracks and experimenting whilst also developing our production techniques. It was a labour of love to some extent and really shaped us as producers and artists. It turned out into a piece of work that has now passed the test of time. ‘Lifetimes’, which came from the Alien Radio sessions, remixed by Pan-Pot, was one of the biggest Soma 20th anniversary releases last year.

More recently we are really enjoying the freedom we have allowed ourselves in the studio – with no specific deadlines – mainly making tracks for our Paragraph label and for Drumcode along with some remixes we have been doing. It’s very much material for our live and DJ sets and we are road testing new material every weekend on tour or at our residencies in Glasgow and London. Soma are currently compiling the singles along with recent remixes we have done and will be releasing as a compilation double album entitled ‘Collecting Data’.

Zero dB came about at the start of the millennium when myself and Chris (Vogado) had finished building our recording studio we had in London. ‘Come Party’ was the first track we made in the new studio and kind of defined our sound right from the start.

Was there any particular idea in mind when recording it?

We’ve basically been resident DJs at the Pickle for over a year so it really feels like home when we play there. This set was in the middle of the summer so we played a bunch of sweaty, sticky jams and of course tried to go on a journey…

What comes to mind when you think of Singapore?

Islands, rain forests and durians. Oh and we heard its really clean!

What can we look forward to for your set in Singapore?

Will it be 6 hours?

Has this year been off to a good start? What’s happening?

2012 has been great so far. From beach parties at BPM festival in Mexico to friends’ weddings we’ve had some fun, but mostly been chilling at home in Miami. Singapore is where we really kick off our musical year!

Who are some of your musical influences?

Ever thought of moving to Berlin?

Yeah sure i thought about it. A few years ago i’ve been pretty sure to move there. But i love the place where i’m living. Constance is a small beautiful city near to switzerland and austria, with a big beautiful lake. It’s an important inspiration for me, so at the moment there is no need to move there.

What are some future projects of yours we can look forward to?

2011 i started some interesting projects and collaborations. Next releases are the amazing second remix pack of my album “The Alpha State” and a collaboration EP on Tanzbar Musik called “With A Bigly Help Of My Friends EP” with Martin Eyerer, Todd Bodine, Louis Osbourne etc. 2012 i will start my label and will tour the globe, so enough things to do ;-)

Can you tell us about the mix itself?

It’s a slow one. We begin around 90 bpm and stop under 110. It’s a mingling of old classics and brand new songs so I decided to create a meeting place for them. They’re 10 tracks that I enjoy listening by myself or with friends; some kind of a soulful set you can listen for the aperitif and chill-out. If this podcast had a name, it will be “The Syllogisme of Foreplay”.

What’s the idea behind the mix?

I like to change the mood whenever I play in a club by playing different genres and this is what I wanted to do on this mix. It’s a bit of story that starts off strong and dark then goes into a deeper and more melodic tech. A bit of old school and some deep and dubby vocals back up into deep techno. I hate to be restrained to one vibe, and I think this mix shows it.

Of all the people you have yet to work with, who do you want to work with the most?

I’ve always answered this question with Chaka Khan and recently did a remix of her song, “Disrespectful” feat. Mary J. Blige. Well, I’m fortunate to work with a lot of my heroes – Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Roy Ayers, Maxwell, Earth Wind & Fire, Bootsy Collins just to name a few. But ever since I became a producer, I’d have to say Quincey Jones! I don’t think there’s anybody I’ve respect more. Also, I wouldn’t mind burning some trees with D’Angelo and locking myself into the studio for a week to see what we can come up with. I love his voice and the way he plays his keys is absolutely fantastic. They’re two complete opposites – Quincey’s productions are totally thought out. Every little riff compliments the next, each instrument plays a melody that in today’s music would be enough to create a new song. As for D’Angelo’s musi, it is totally understated. I love his minimalistic approach. It’s all about the mood and I like that.

What’s the last record u bought?

Jill Scotts last album…a little disappointing

First two records you ever tried to mix?

lol..like I can remember. I was always more interested in programming the right songs, rather than doing the perfect mix, but I always liked a challenge, so it could have been Kraftwerk – Tour De France or Numbers into Sisters Of Mercy – Alice

Who or what is inspiring you at the moment?

My son..he just turned 8 and he is amazing! Musically, I am diggin’ Layo and Bushwacka!’s stuff of late and am always excited when Henrik Schwartz puts out something new.

What happens when all the partying is over?

I have had my share of partying and think I am on to the next phase, but I will always be a DJ.

What’s next for matthias heilbronn?

I have worked in the studio a lot over the last year, so it’s a matter of putting all this stuff out and finding the right outlet. The productions I have done with Joeski are coming out through both of our labels, a new track with Gerideau is getting a major remix treatment from the likes of Rocco, etc.. My favorite project of last year though was writing and recording an album with Monique Bingham of Abstract Truth. We need a couple of touch ups, but the songs and music is amazing and I can’t wait to put it out!!

Building expertly from start to finish, Artihc takes you on a ride once again on an intergalactic journey of house and techno. Let it rip!

Erik naturally jumps from his bedroom’s console to the consoles of underground parties which helped launched his dj career. Currently based in Singapore, the last six years had seen him traveling around Asia, immersing himself in the burgeoning dance scene which inevitably played a huge role in the evolution of his music style – a mix of deep / techy / progressive mashed-up sound, often tweaked and customized for every club. Whether unleashing bigroom beats or fabricating dj set odysseys thought the deepest corners of techno, deep house and tech, Erik’s  music has only one simple rule: let it be funky with delicious basslines.

Leading the return is a deep, dark and cosy mix by dj/graphic designer/singer/funny & friendly man currently based in Berlin, John Osborn. With an immense passion for music and design, John Osborn’s (who was also the front man of the post punk electro brand, Neon Man) approach to djing is the same as his approach to design and writing lyrics. To quote him, “just keep on trying and enjoy the ride, as the ride is often much better than arriving..”. Word John. This immaculate mix was recorded live through the old yet trusty Rane 2016 mixer, at his residency night, JACKSON at Cookies Club (berlin), while he was warming up for a very good friend Julian Smith aka October.
